Have you ever stared at weird codes like A89 and C32 for minutes and confused at what they mean? Well, this blog is definitely for you. 

The Encyclopedia of Chess Openings classifies openings by the codes A00 to E99. Though not much, it sure helps. Below I will list the main classification of openings. Its a bit long but pls enjoy

A00 = Uncommon Flank Openings (1. g4, 1. a3, 1. h3 etc.)

A01 = Nimzowitsch-Larsen Attack (1. b3)

A02-A03 = Bird's Opening (1. f4)

A04-A08 = Reti Opening (1. Nf3)

A10-A14 = English Opening without Nf6, c5 or e5

A15-A19 = Anglo-Indian Opening (1. c4 Nf6)

A20-A29 = Reversed Sicilian (1. c4 e5)

A30-A39 = Symmetrical English (1. c4 c5)

A40-A42 = Minor Queen's Pawn Variations

A43-A44 = Old Benoni (1. d4 c5)

A45-A49 = 2. Nf3 in the Indian Game

B00 = Uncommon King's Pawn Openings

B01 = Scandinavian Defense

B02-B05 = Alekhine's Defense

B06 = Modern/Robatsch Defense

B07-B09 = Pirc Defense

B10-B19 = Caro-Kann Defense

B20-B22 = 2nd move alternatives for white in the Sicilian

B23-B26 = Closed Sicilian

B27-B29 = 2nd moves alternatives for Black in the 2. Nf3 Sicilian
