What Mars Survival Skills and Chess Have in Common
In Chess, Like On Mars, You Just Need To Solve The Next Problem" 🚀
So there I was, at 2 AM, stuffing popcorn in my face while watching "The Martian" for the billionth time (don't judge), when suddenly Matt Damon dropped the most perfect chess advice I've ever heard:
"At some point, everything's gonna go south on you... everything's going to go south and you're going to say, this is it. This is how I end. Now you can either accept that, or you can get to work. That's all it is. You just begin. You do the math. You solve one problem... and you solve the next one... and then the next. And If you solve enough problems, you get to come home."
I paused the movie. Wait a minute... isn't this EXACTLY what chess is about?
The Chess-Mars Connection 🎯
Think about it:
- Stranded on Mars = Stuck in a difficult position
- Limited resources = Limited space or ideas
- Multiple problems = Multiple threats and weaknesses against you
- Need to get home = Need to find the winning path or a part to equalize the position
Just like Watney couldn't solve all his Mars problems at once (you know, minor issues like food, water, shelter, communication, and, oh yeah, getting back to Earth), we can't solve all our chess problems in one move.
The Real Problem With Our Chess Thinking 🤔
Here's what typically happens in our games:
- We see a complicated position
- We panic
- We make the first move that "looks right"
- We hope it somehow works out
- Narrator: "It did not work out," followed by a blunder.
We're basically trying to return from Mars by pointing our rocket in Earth's general direction and hoping for the best.
The Watney Method for Chess 🧮
Instead of panicking, break it down:
- What's your biggest immediate problem?
- What resources do you have?
- What's the next problem after that?
- Solve them one by one
Just like Watney didn't try to solve food, water, and communication all at once, you don't need to solve your entire position in one move.
A Better Way to Think 🧠
The beauty of this approach? It works everywhere:
- In chess
- In life
- And yes, even on Mars
When you learn to break down complex problems into smaller, solvable chunks, you're not just becoming a better chess player - you're becoming a better problem solver.
