4th Graders Should Have Chess Club
By Arjuna Hariprasad
One girl in Africa learned chess from a chess coach named Babatande Onakaya. He posted her story on facebook and a woman decided to fund the little girl’s schooling. This caused real change in her education and confidence (BBC 2019).
This story is one of the reasons why 4th graders should have a chess club. 4th graders have a chess club because it’ll sharpen their focus in class. For example, when I played chess for indoor recess I was able to focus more in the lesson. Chess club would also help because it will help the 4th graders stop and think before making an action or move. For example, in chess I was about to make a blunder but before I made my move I realized that it was a blunder. Chess is a game that people can play at all ages, for instance, my grandpa is almost 80 and he still plays chess. Another reason that 4th graders should have a chess club is it allows the teacher to catch-up on work. This is why I strongly recommend 4th graders should have a chess club. The main points for establishing a chess club for 4th graders are centered on personal development, academic focus, and practical classroom benefits.
