Two thieves.

One on each side of Jesus.
First thief mocked Jesus: “If you’re the son of God, rescue yourself and us!”

Second thief said this to the First: “Don’t you know that we deserve what we’re getting? But this man has done nothing wrong!”

Second thief then said this to Jesus: “Lord, please just remember me, when you come to your kingdom.”

Then Jesus says a remarkable thing to the Second thief: “Truly, I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

Now, the Second thief recognized Jesus as who He was/is. The Christ, the hope for all mankind. Somehow this man’s spiritual eyes were opened, and he saw and he knew.

I want to point out…this man was a criminal; by his own admission, he deserved what he was getting, this man probably did no good works in his life, BUT – he recognized and declared that Jesus is truly the son of God. He didn’t say: “If you are the messiah…” he simply called Jesus Lord.

No matter what you’ve done, no matter if you can do nothing else, Jesus waits for one simple statement of faith.

As he said to Simon Peter in Luke 9:20, “Who do you say I am?”
