Harry Potter: The Knight. Constantly leaping into situations without thinking, often landing in awkward or dangerous spots. His "L" shaped movement is less a strategic maneuver and more him tripping over things and somehow ending up in a new location.
Hermione Granger: The Queen. Knows all the right moves and constantly sighs dramatically whenever anyone else (especially Ron) makes a terrible one. She often tries to control the entire board and gets visibly frustrated when she can't.
Ron Weasley: The Rook. Mostly just stands there looking a bit lost, occasionally moving in a straight line with surprising force when he finally figures out where he's supposed to go. Gets easily distracted by passing snacks.
Albus Dumbledore: The King. Moves one square at a time in a mysterious and slightly whimsical way, often muttering cryptic advice to the other pieces. Seems less concerned with his own safety and more interested in offering lemon drops.
Minerva McGonagall: The Bishop. Glides diagonally with an air of severe disapproval for anyone not following the rules. If a piece is out of line, expect a sharp word (or a swift capture).
Severus Snape: The other Bishop. Also glides diagonally, but always looks like he's plotting something and judging everyone's moves. Leaves a faint trail of sarcasm wherever he goes on the board.
Draco Malfoy: A Pawn who insists he's about to promote to a King any minute now. Makes a lot of noise about his potential but mostly just gets pushed around.
Neville Longbottom: Another Pawn who keeps forgetting how to move and needs constant reminders. Occasionally stumbles forward two squares by accident and surprises everyone, including himself.
Rubeus Hagrid: A Rook who's incredibly strong but sometimes forgets he can only move in straight lines and tries to take diagonal shortcuts. Occasionally knocks over other pieces by accident with his enthusiasm.
Luna Lovegood: A Knight whose "L" shaped moves seem to follow some entirely different geometry only she understands. Often ends up in unexpected and occasionally brilliant (but mostly baffling) squares.
