They said the Knight was the trickster, the jester of the board. But tonight, it was the nightmare. It didn't move in straight lines, or predictable diagonals. It hopped. Over obstacles, over its own comrades, its L-shaped trajectory a mockery of logic. Elias watched, paralyzed, as the black Knight danced. It wasn't aiming for a piece, not yet. It was simply moving, each jump landing with a soft, sickening thump that echoed in the silent room. It seemed to be circling, tightening an invisible noose around his King, but its path was incomprehensible, its intent unknowable. He tried to predict its next move, but its very nature defied reason. It was a predator that didn't follow rules, a madman in a structured world, and its next, unseen leap would undoubtedly be the one that broke him.
