The London System

The London System is an opening recently popularized by Magnus Carlsen and others. Its aim is to quickly develop the dark-squared bishop and control the center. It allows for many of the concepts mentioned in: https://www.chess.com/blog/AJ109932/magic-with-your-knight

Pros:

  • Allows for your knights and bishops to play important roles.
  • Controls the center.
  • White can build a rock-solid center.
  • Keep the position closed allowing an uncompromised pawn structure for most of the game.
  • Holds on to the first move advantage of white.
  • Allows for safe developments.
  • The pawn is protected from the start by the Queen.
  • Leads to the Pillsbury Attack: https://www.chess.com/blog/AJ109932/magic-with-your-knight
  • Played by Grandmasters.
  • Very defensive.

Cons:

  • Though it is a strong opening, it is not great for beginners.
  • Does not lead to a quick attack.
  • It is defensive so it does not put much pressure on black.
  • May expose the bishop on f4.
