What is Chess 960

Chess960
, also known as Fischer Random Chess or Fischerandom, is a variant of chess invented and advocated by former world chess champion Bobby Fischer, announced publicly on June 19, 1996, in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

It employs the same board and pieces as standard chess, but the starting position of the pieces on the players' home ranks is randomized, under certain constraints. The random setup renders the prospect of obtaining an advantage through the memorization of opening lines impracticable, compelling players to rely instead on their talent and creativity.

Randomizing the main pieces had long been known as Shuffle Chess; however, Chess960 introduces restrictions on the randomization, "preserving the dynamic nature of the game by retaining bishops of opposite colors for each player and the right to castle for both sides". The result is 960 unique possible starting positions.

In 2008, FIDE added Chess960 to an appendix of the Laws of Chess. In April 2019 FIDE announced plans to hold a formal Chess960 world championship tournament.

Is Chess 960 the future of chess?

We all like chess 960 (Fischer Random). It is an interesting chess variant, it's a real challenge for chess players high and low level. Chess 960 is gainnig popularity very fast. FIDE not such a long time ago organized an online event on chess.com that is called the FIDE World Fischer Random Chess Championship. With the speed, Fischer Random is growing people are starting to think that Chess 960 is gonna take over classical chess.

I think no matter what happens classical chess is still gonna be played on a professional level even if chess 960 takes classical's place in.

Other chess variants

Fischer Random is gaining strength but what about the other chess variants like Crazy House, 3 check, .....the reason for that is, because of the fact that Chess 960 trains your chess tactics more than let's say Bug House.

Another reason that chess 960 is more popular and makes it more interesting is the historie of this variant. Bobby Fischer himself is the one who invented it. He invented it so he can train his tactics. The reason it sharpens your tactics is that you can never be ready for the position you are gonna play in and if you try to predict it good luck with that because there are 960 positions you can get. (1/960)
