Turkish chess grandmaster defeats world champion Carlsen in online game

Vahap Şanal, a 21-year old Turkish chess grandmaster, defeated the world’s number one chess player Magnus Carlsen in an online game, opposition newspaper Sözcü reported on Wednesday.

Şanal and the Norwegian chess champion were randomly matched in a Blitz 5/0 game, where no seconds are given as increments when players make a move.

Şanal gained dominance in the game after the 10th move, Sözcü said.

“Good play, where is the leave button,” Sözcü quoted Carlsen as saying after losing the game.

Şanal, a chess player from Turkey’s western coastal province of İzmir, became the youngest chess player in Turkish National Team when he was eight years old. He became a Candidate Master in 2008 when he won the 4th World Schools Chess Championships and was awarded the title of grandmaster in 2016.

Carlsen, known as the “Mozart of Chess”, earned the grandmaster title when he was only 13. The 29-year old Carlsen has been the highest rated chess player in the world since 2011.
