How to Think At Chess? Lesson 1
How to think at Chess? Lesson 1
In the game of chess, fundmentally, there are two things that must be done:
- Becoming a calculator.
- Painting the board beautifully.
By watching or analyzing master games you will have a sense of beauty in chess.
A very easy example can be given like below:
Which side would you rather play? Of course white! This sense will develop in time.
About becoming a calculator there is a principle that you should know: CTT ( Check, Takes, Threat). Generally checking is the most forcing move so you shall check it first. Taking is less forcing however it might cause material loose for your opponent. And threats are sometimes silent and sometimes brutal. If there are no tactics found by the order I just mentioned, play for the position beauty.
Let me show you a example of the CTT method. Use the CTT method below:
BLACK to move:
Solution: 5.
a5+ . When the check is blocked you can enjoy the free knight
.
White to move:
Solution: 4.dxe5, dxe5 (To avoid the pawn loss 4....
xf3 should have been done) 5.
xd8,
xd8 6.
xe5 [And white wins a pawn.]
White to move:
Solution: 4.c3 and the
is trapped! A simple looking move just won a piece!
LAST QUESTION( White to Move): (This is a move that has been made by Christiansen. Former World Champion Anatoly Karpov could not seen this!)
Solution: 12.
d1 (Double attacks the knight and d3 bishop)
A silent move can win you the game, so try to seek every move (the CTT method), even if you find a good one.
Try solving puzzles with this method. It will have a suprising effect on your game.
The next lesson will cover the weaknesses you should avoid and seek your opponents.
