Rare positions
After a while, almost all chess games reach unplayed positions, such is the nature of the game. So the article title is a misnomer.
But in the past week I've seen a friend successfully execute a bishop and knight versus King checkmate, and then my brother miss a wonderful opportunity to test a Queen vs three minors in a Daily game.
Alas the best moves are the ones played off the board.
Here's the position from one of the latter games in the "Northern Ontario & Friends 2022 Daily Tournament."
White is having a great time and now sets about to end things in spectacular fashion. Except that the Queen can be taken!
After the moves 24. ...hxg6 25. h7+ Kg7 26. Rh4! Qf5 27. h8=B+! :) (not Rxb4 Qxc2#) ...Rxh8 28. Rxb4 we have the following unclear position.
The presence of 4 rooks and 9 pawns still on the board makes the position incredibly dynamic.
I complained to my brother that a draw would have kept me in contention with @HommeManly for first place in the group. Only the group winners will duke it out for top dog in this tournament.
Whose side would you take and why, had the game reached this position?
