Beginner Chess
If you're starting chess as a beginner, here are the most important basics to learn first. ♟️
1. Learn the Chessboard
The board has 64 squares (8×8).
Light square should be on the bottom-right corner.
Each player starts with 16 pieces.
Pieces:
1 King
1 Queen
2 Rooks
2 Bishops
2 Knights
8 Pawns
2. How the Pieces Move
King – moves one square in any direction.
Queen – moves any number of squares in any direction.
Rook – moves horizontally or vertically.
Bishop – moves diagonally.
Knight – moves in an L-shape (2 squares + 1 sideways).
Pawn – moves forward 1 square (2 squares on first move) and captures diagonally.
3. Goal of the Game
The goal is to checkmate the opponent’s king.
Check: the king is under attack.
Checkmate: the king cannot escape → the game ends.
4. Basic Opening Principles
Good beginners follow these rules:
Control the center (squares e4, d4, e5, d5).
Develop pieces early (knights and bishops).
Castle your king for safety.
Don’t move the same piece many times in the opening.
5. Good Openings for Beginners
These are simple and strong openings:
Ruy Lopez
King's Gambit
Italian Game
London System
6. Beginner Tips
Always look at your opponent’s move before playing.
Try not to hang pieces (leave them undefended).
Practice simple tactics like forks, pins, and ske
wers.
Play slow games to improve thinking.
