RUY LOPEZ
The Ruy Lopez is one of the most famous and oldest openings in chess. It’s also called the Spanish Opening because it was analyzed in the 1500s by the Spanish priest Ruy López de Segura.
Basic Moves
The Ruy Lopez usually starts with these moves:
e4 – White controls the center
1... e5 – Black also controls the center
Nf3 – White attacks the pawn on e5
2... Nc6 – Black defends the pawn
Bb5 – This is the Ruy Lopez
Why 3. Bb5?
White attacks the knight on c6, which defends the e5 pawn.
The idea is to put pressure on Black’s center and prepare to castle.
Main Ideas
White aims to build strong center control (d4 later).
The bishop on b5 pressures the knight.
White usually castles kingside early.
The game often becomes strategic rather than tactical.
Common Black Defenses
Some popular responses from Black:
3…a6 – Morphy Defense (most common)
3…Nf6 – Berlin Defense (very solid)
3…d6 – Steinitz Defense
Note :
Even top players like Magnus Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura, and Bobby Fischer have used the Ruy Lopez many times.
