The Power of the Rook

In this lesson, we learn about the rook, one of the most powerful pieces in chess. The rook moves in straight lines, either across the board or up and down, and becomes especially strong when the board opens up. A rook placed on an open file can control the entire column, and if it reaches the seventh rank, it creates serious threats by attacking pawns and restricting the enemy king. Often players use a rook lift, bringing the rook up and then across, to join the attack quickly. In the endgame, the rook is the most important piece for checkmating and for supporting pawns to reach promotion. Mastering the rook means mastering long-range power and turning small advantages into victory.
