Normally, white has a variety of openings to choose from. But only some openings are the best and it is important to know them. Let's discuss some of the greatest openings for white-

1) The Ruy López

The Ruy López also known as the 'Spanish Game' is a great opening choice for white. The move Bb5 played by white puts pressure on the knight protecting the pawn in the center. This opening is very good as it helps with quick development, puts pressure on black and helps castle quickly. This opening is one of the most played openings by many Grandmasters, including Magnus Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura, Bobby Fischer, Garry Kasparov and Vishwanathan Anand.

2) Italian Game

The Italian Game also known as the 'Giuoco Piano' is an alternative to the Ruy López especially if white does not want to attack much and keep the game simple. The move Bc4 helps to control the center and like the Ruy López this opening too, helps in rapid development. The Italian Game also puts pressure on the weak f7 pawn, thus gaining white an advantageous position.
3) Trompowsky Attack
If you like 1.d4 then Trompowsky Attack is the one you should try. This opening is very aggressive and leads to original play. Even though the absence of the white bishop may weaken the b2 pawn, it increases white's chances of winning the game.
4) English Opening
If you don't want to play 1.e4 or 1.d4 then you should consider the English Opening. This opening does not really concentrate on fast development, instead it fights for d5 and puts pressure on black's queenside. This opening also increases white's chances of winning the game.
