What Happened to Ding Liren?
Ding Liren:
Ding Liren (born on 24th october 1992) is the current Fide World Champion (2023-present), two time runner up of Fide World Cup 2x, 3x Chinese Champion (first time he became champion when he was 16 years old), Represented China 4 times in olympics and team got two golds in 2014 and 2018 and getting one bronze and one gold medal for individual performance respectively, One time grand chess tour winner and the former world no 2 in classical and former world no 1 in rapid and blitz, Peak classical rating of 2816 and longest unbeaten streak of 100 games with avg opponent of 2697 rating.
Things look good till now right? he became world champion too?
But this isn't the case. Let's dive into the journey of a player who had potential to be greatest chess player but fell off!
Becoming the world champion:
In 2022 candidates, Ding Liren came 2nd with a score of 8/14 and Nepo came first but the former world champion Magnus Carlsen decided not to play which means now Ding had a chance to play. Before world championship, Ding Played in Tata Steel 2023 where he played terribly and got 11th out of 14 player and got 3 losses. It was clear that he needed someone to help him and He got Richard Rapport on his team aka the most fun player. Rapport Made Ding Play some different openings like London and French. 4) h3 in game 2 of world chess championship was also an Idea of Richard Rapport.
Ding Liren was not confident that he will win. He was depressed a lot during his world chess championship. He felt a huge pressure on his head. Week before his world chess championship, He broke up with his girlfriend. The phrase used by people in Chess community was "Ding Chilling" but it was clear he wasn't but against all odds He tied 7-7 in classical and defeated Ian 2.5-1.5 in rapid tiebreaks. He became the world champion but he said "This is a mixed feeling" He said now he has to dedicate more time to chess. He even went on to say "Crown is too heavy". He also mentioned that if he thought if he lost the match then he would retire from Chess.
After becoming the Champion:
Ding Disappeared for 9 months and withdrew from all the tournaments. He only played one tournament after his world championship where he got 7th out 10 players.
After 9 month of disappearance he would appear at tata steel and finish 9th out of 14 player with a score of 6/13 with two wins and three losses. Now, He would play Chess 960 tournament where he scored 0.5/7 but it was 960 not real chess so it was okay. Later in a tournament we saw a improved Ding in grenke chess classic where finished 4th out of 6th and later 5th out 6th after tiebreaks.
Now He played in Norway chess, Starting with an armageddon loss to Magnus and an armageddon win against Pragg and after that Ding lose 4 classical games in a row and even missing mate in two
Ding was not out of top 10 in world and was losing rating rapidly. In grenke chess classical he lost 42 elo which made him world no 2 in rapid from world no one. It was clear that Ding wasn't okay but he was trying his best. Later he played in Rapid and blitz team championship where he scored 8.5/12 which was a good score in rapid and earned silver medal. In blitz he scored 7.5/10. He looked pretty fine. Next in line was sinqufield cup. Ding has won this tournament in past defeating Magnus 3-1 in tiebreaks will he be able to make a comeback here ? Well I have heard this quote which says "Confidence is the key to success" and we all know how confident Ding is right now?
Ding got many winning positions against all top players including his opponent Gukesh. He has a winning position against Gukesh , Fabi , Nodirbek and Wesely So but he agreed on a draw as he had an fear of losing. Ding scored 3.5/9 Ding fell from world no 2 to world no 21 .......... ( as of 20-09-2024)
Closing Thoughts:
Ding Liren is clearly lacking confidence and is in depression. He has a world championship match against Gukesh in november and Gukesh is in form. I as a ding fan know that Gukesh has 90% chances of winning and I will respect your decision even if you support Gukesh because it's your personal choice but I request you to not to troll Ding too. He's suffering right now. I am 90% sure that he will quit chess if he loses next world championship and it would be sad to see such a pure soul quit chess world forever. He recently said this in an interview
"Maybe Gukesh is the favorite in world championship match....."
Ding is not in form but I am wishing him a speedy recovery and I hope to see an exciting match. Good Luck to both players and I would still request chess world to not to troll Ding.
