The (Almost) Amazing Alekhine's Defense
I've become convinced recently that the Dragon is one of black's most underrated replies to 1.e4. However, I've always wanted to spice up my repertoire against 1.e4 with something less well known. Everyone knows the English attack against the Dragon, but what do people know against...the Alekhine? The more I looked at the Alekhine lines and novelties examined below, the more I became convinced that this was the opening I had been searching for: Dynamic, underrated, and sticking it to the opponent on move 1. Until I wasn't. Below's my initial template of the novelties and interesting tries I always make before deciding if I want to pursue an opening further.
The Modern Main Line
So that was pretty exciting for me. Now what about the Four Pawns Attack?
The Four Pawns Attack
So that got me even more excited. I thought I was really stumbling upon the dynamic, underrated surprise weapon I was looking to complement my Dragon.
The Old Main Line
So that was also really exciting. And here's the line that ruined it all:
The Kinda Refutation, At Least for Me
So that was dessert, and it sort of invalidated the previous dynamic lines I had found. It's a forced and powerful line for white player's to prepare with against an Alekhine player. It's a solid human += and destroys the dynamic soul of black's position.
A big belief of mine is that if you're going to play a fighting opening, play one that gives white no back door to back out, like the Modern Benoni. I've found that there are amazing discoveries waiting in many of these forgotten fighting openings for black, In the case of the Alekhine's defense, however, white can not only back out with 9.dxe5!?, but it basically refutes this whole 4.g6 variation, at least in spirit.
