I was going to write a blog for April Fools but last weekend, I was in Canada. I also made an April Fools video presentation where I presented 15 chess jokes/puns  to the world. I just went with 15 because I felt like it and it’s also a very common number. Overall, I am pretty content with how the video turned out. There are 2 copies of my video on YouTube, one on my channel and the other on the Impact Chess channel where I gave them permission to post it. And just saying, my video on the Impact Chess Channel has a nicer thumbnail and more creative title name than mine. Well, I’m sure you can find my video pretty easily, all you have to do is type in “April fools chess vid”. Yeah it’s a boring title  but the content itself is very interesting although you might not understand some of the name choices I used because they started as inside jokes. It was definitely tough filming  because I had to do it at 4am on April 1 since that’s when there is the least amount of background noise near my room.  It was stressful recording but at least it's done. And this is my favorite joke/pun  shown below.

Then a week later, I  played OTB.  However, I couldn't play the last day because I caught a very bad cough  and I woke up feeling like absolute crap.  This sums up  how I felt after my OTB tourney: I had an Ok performance but I was not feeling “OK” the last day. I guess I was lucky I did not catch the cold when I recorded the April Fools video because the quality of the video would have been terrible. I will write about 2 of my games below that I feel like were important .

Tournament Summary

My last big OTB was like in September, like literally a week before I officially became a member of Impact Chess. This time, I was very unlucky because I got paired with only kids and young teenagers. The good news is that I managed to score 3 points out of the 5 games that I played. I only lost 1 game where I had the black pieces and I just got slowly outplayed and eventually I made the last mistake in time trouble. My opponent played very well so credit goes to him for beating me.  Funnily, after my loss,  the next 2 games were against sub-10 year old talented kids who are very underrated.  I mainly applied the lessons to my jokes/pun #9, #10, #11, and #12 in my video  and they really motivated me overall after my tough loss in the tournament. It helped me so much and I will show the 2 games below with annotations to illustrate my point.

Well I drew to someone much lower rated than me. I could have lost if I got too careless but a draw is at least better than a loss.  When I plugged this game in Lichess, it says that I had a 10 avg centipawn loss and he had a 9 avg centipawn loss. Very funny,
Yeah that was another close game. I was able to capitalize on my opponent's last mistake.  I felt like I played pretty well this game and Lichess analysis confirms it as I got an avg centipawn loss of 10 which means that I did not make any serious mistakes.
Overall, I must say that I am proud of how I recovered mentally after a tough loss in round 3.  I also mentioned in the lesson to joke/pun #9 in my video that you should never let any setbacks or losses affect your performance.  You should focus on what's in front of you and forget about your opponent's chess rating and just play the position on the board. Never make moves based on your opponent's rating. Always try to find the best move and calculate the best lines possible and don't hope that your opponent will mess up just by a simple tactic or trick. You saw both of my games and I hope you understand how strong and talented kids are these day.  They find all the tactics and they like to play for simple tricks themselves. They are just too good at tricks. The only way to play against them is positional if you want to have better winning chances.  And I'm sure these kids will become elite players one day.
I hope you enjoyed my video (if you choose to watch the whole thing) and my blog. I apologize for writing this a bit late.  I hope you all had a good Easter. And remember "Silly Rabbit, Tricks are for kids."
