Rook and King v/s King

Rook and King v/s King

Hi guys, welcome to my blog. Today, I will cover an endgame when you are up a full rook and your opponent has a lonely king.

So the first key rule is to cut off the king to the rank/file, depending and then dragging it to a corner. For example:

The rook cuts off the king from the 4th rank, preventing it from coming downwards. Let's say the king moves towards our rook. Then we bring our king to support our rook.

Then if the king walks towards to attack our rook, then we keep bringing the king.

Now in this position, white moves away the rook to a square where its king is closer than the opponent's king because on the next move black is going to attack the rook. If you want, you can move the king and then when black attacks, then you move the rook. BUT KEEP THE ROOK ON THE SAME RANK/FILE SO THAT IT DOES NOT COME DOWNWARDS/LEFT SIDE/RIGHT SIDE.

Now the next key rule is that whenever the king comes in front of your king with one square in between, then you check with the rook, and in this case, force it to move upwards. If black moves to the left, then you follow the king, forcing it to move upwards or come in front of the king.

Now, you bring your king up and follow the same rules until the opponent king is on the back rank/edge of the board.

And let's imagine you have forced the opponent king on the edge of the board, then how are you going to checkmate?

When the king is at the edge of the board, you force the king to come in front of the king with one square in between and check the king which would result in a checkmate because the king can't move upwards. So you follow the king. For example in this case, following the king will not work because black will keep moving the king. So, you play a waiting move by moving the rook and it should be closer to your king.

Kf8 would be covered later. Let's say black plays Kd8 and runs away. Then you follow the king. The king has to move because of the checkmate, and when the king reaches to the corner, checkmate with the rook.

If we go back and cover Kf8. When your opponent's king is front of your king, but you can't checkmate with the rook because the square is covered, then you move the king towards the rook, forcing it to move to the left corner, and then we follow and checkmate in the same way.

So that was it for my blog! Bye!
