Standard Over Neo - Piece Theme Comparison

So one day, while looking at screenshots of variants, I never seemed to understand why so many people choose the Neo theme. I mean, Standard is definitely superior. Don’t believe me? Well, you’ll [hopefully] see.

So here’s an example. This…

…is a Chancellor. Would you like to guess how it moves?

Yes, that’s right! It moves like a Rook and a Knight combined.

Now, guess what this piece is:

If you said a Chancellor, you would be correct. But the real question is: How did you know it was a Chancellor? What part of the piece’s design indicated that it was a Chancellor?

Better question: How would you know how the piece moves if you didn’t click on it?

Here’s another one. Guess this piece:

If you said an Amazon, you would be. . .

Wrong. Try again.

If you said. . .Archbishop,

you would be…

definitely wrong.

No, in fact the piece was actually. . .

a General, that moves like a Knight and a King combined. Amazing, right?

Here’s a harder one. Guess what this piece is:

If you didn’t say a Wildebeest, then you’re wrong. It’s obviously a Wildebeest becau- wait what? That’s a Wildebeest?

Alright, since apparently it’s a Wildebeest, let’s see how it moves.

Oh, it moves like a Knight + Camel.

Who. . . would’ve. . . thought. . .

Finally, here are some more examples.

From left to right:

Archbishop (H), combines Knight and Bishop

Alibaba (Y), jumps 2 squares in any direction

Soldier (β), a pawn that moves and captures straight forward

Knight-Rider (O), a Knight that makes repeated Knight moves in one direction

Simple, right?

Now compare it to Neo:

Big difference.

So in short, Standard theme is superior to Neo. The Standard piece designs help incorporate the pieces’ corresponding movement, making it easier to remember how each piece moves.

The Neo piece designs…

are weird.
