Variant Spotlight: Cornered
Introduction
Hello. Today, I am starting a new series called “Variant Spotlight”, where I will be highlighting some of the variants on the Variants server that I think deserve additional attention outside of the dedicated Custom Variants club.
This series will feature a new variant every two months, and each new blog will be published near the end of the current month.
Additionally, the variant that is featured each time will alternate between an NCV (a variant explicitly listed on the server) and a WoF (a variant mainly played in arenas).
Today’s Variant Spotlight
The first featured variant is: Cornered
Creator submission: https://variants.world/posts/1813
Details
Cornered, which was accepted on July 5, 2025, has become one of the most popular 2-player variants on the Variants server. It has everything one might want for something easy to learn, quick to play, and yet difficult to master.
By default, the time control is just 3 minutes for each player, which highly encourages and emphasizes intuitive moves and rapid-fire decisions. A typical game of Cornered will usually proceed without the need for deep calculations experienced in more complex variants. This allows players to play more games of the variant overall (especially compared to slower variants with rapid time controls), simultaneously gaining experience and variant intuition.
Stats Drop - Cornered
Games played in the last 24 hours: 121

Featured as the Platinum Variant for September 2025
Personal Thoughts
For me, I find Cornered to be an excellent representation of what a “modern” variant would look like. It elegantly fulfills many of the current standards that the CGA team uses to evaluate variants, while also being a fast-paced variant with a faster time control, making it inherently attractive to a substantial portion of the Variants playerbase.
Although the variant is not heavy on complex tactics and calculations, that is not to say that all tactics and calculations are absent; players who are familiar with more advanced variants tactics and prefer slower variants will still enjoy the surprising, satisfying, and yet simply sophisticated tactics that this variant has to offer.
Overall, it really is just a variant that was destined to become popular from Day 1. If you don’t believe that, then maybe this will convince you…
Youtube Videos
Since its acceptance, Cornered has been the subject of at least 7 YouTube videos, including 6 made by the famous chess YouTuber Chess Simp.

In total, these videos have a combined total of over 112,000 views, which is… pretty insane for a random chess variant (lol).
This probably also contributes to the explanation of the ~600 active players: people who click on these videos are more likely to play the variant themselves.
Speaking of playing the variant…

A few beginner tips:
1. Your Soldiers (your 6 pieces on your second rank) cannot defend each other at all, because they can only move and capture vertically, and they are unable to change files in this variant. Because of this, you should find ways to defend them with your other pieces, allowing them to take space and approach the promotion rank.
2. Sometimes, the relative value of a Soldier can be more than the relative value of another piece. Do not be afraid to sacrifice a piece for a Soldier if the soldier is close to promotion (but do not just sacrifice pieces mindlessly).
Conclusion
Hope you enjoyed the start of a new variants series! I look forward to writing many more of these, as new variants keep being accepted and testers continue testing (hi @VarostTheFlail [VishTheFish771]).
The next post in this series will be between June 24, 2026 and June 30, 2026.
