Paladin's Theme Tournament of August 2010,

Erkki J. Salonen Memorial Tournament in Jyväskylä 23rd August 2010

The Memorial Tournament of Erkki J. Salonen was held in Jyväskylä on 23rd August 2010. The time control of the tourney was 15+15 minutes. Ten players (including two cancidate masters) were present and two of them started on the 2nd round. It was a huge surprise that the highest ranked player (CM von Wright) lost on the second round. After that the field was open. At the end of the tournament we had a surprise winner - Mauno Heinonen - who won all of his games.  He played good and solid chess.

The used tie break method to determinate the final rankings was Buchholz system.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Erkki J. Salonen (1938-2010) was a good chess friend of mine who represented the Jämsä Chess Club. His playing strength was intermediate and his highest national rating was about 1600 or 1700. I knew him a little bit over 10 years. I played against him 3 times in official tournaments and my score was 1 draw and 2 losses.

The theme of this tournament was proposed by my good friend and Salonen's club mate Extraordinary. Theme opening was Fred Defence: 1. e4 f5 etc.
