Bobby Fischer – The Man Behind the Moves
Everyone studies Fischer’s games. But what about the man himself?
In this series, I try to understand the man behind the moves — through his own words in the classic chess book 'My 60 Memorable Games'.
In this new video series, I look beyond the board—at what drove Bobby Fischer’s obsession, his unrelenting pursuit of truth in chess, and what we can learn from his approach today.
The first episode is titled: 'Bobby Fischer Stayed Up All Night Analysing This Position'.
It seeks to explore why Fisher pulled an 'all nighter' not down the pub, but on one single endgame position. But this is far more than just 'an endgame position'. It tells us a huge amount about the man himself. I explore not just the moves, but the motivations based on his own thoughts. It also explores ideas of what we can do differently to 'find an edge' in our current engine-obsessed chess climate.
The second in the series (available in an unlisted video just now - link at the back of the first episode) is titled: 'Why Fischer Ignored the Best Move.'
Here I explore why Fischer found the best move but then rejected it! Why did he do this and what can we learn from it?
