This is the blog for the CMT-group chess club. The idea is to teach a bunch of theoretical phycisists how to play chess.

The CMT Chess Club Christmas Tournament (CMTCCCT) was designed so that all players would face each other once. The initial games were 20min+0s per player.

Round 1:

Round 2:

Round 3:

Jens, Asbjørn and Morten all ended on 2/3 points, Johannes on 0/3, so we had a deciding blitz-round the following day. The games here were 5 minutes + 3 seconds increment (actully some of them accidentally were 5 minutes/3 sec "free", which means you did not gain time by making a move, but your clock only lost time after three seconds had gone). Let's look at the three games:

Blitz round:

Since all three finished on 1/2, I had to do something to get a winner. So by doing something equivalent to a coin-toss, I decided randomly that Jens had to proceed to the final, while Asbjørn and Morten had to play a semi-final. Both games had the time-setting 5min/3 sec. Here is the semi-final game:

Semi-final:

So this meant that Jens and Asbjørn had to face off in the final. This went as follows:

Final:

Congratulationsou to Jens on being the CMTCCCC, and congratulations to you all on playing such hard-fought games! I hope you have time to analyze some of your games (especially the ones you lost and the ones with long time-control, but all of them have lots of instructive moments) until we meet in the new year :)

Merry Christmas guys!
