"If my doctor told me I had only six minutes to live, I wouldn´t brood. I´d type a little faster."

- Isaac Asimov

Welcome to my office. Please, make yourself comfortable, open the video below and put it as a background sound while reading. Take a coffee, a tea or water if you prefer. Be my guest.

Why do you write? What motivates you to do that?

I know why I do it. I write to express myself! In the darkest and introspective moment of my life, I went on a crazy and dangerous journey (won´t enter in details), and all I had in my free time was a notebook and a pen.

I was full of anguish, anger and, pain. I transformed all this into words. Breathing fire through my pen, which was being materialized in words. I wrote the full notebook in eight days. Loose phrases, poems, and articles were all written without break. And, in my limited mind, after rereading my notes, I found life sense to me.

Sometimes, when you are in pain, writing can help you to express yourself. Photo: Princess Azula breathing fire by her mouth. Photo: ©Avatar the Last Airbender. Chapter Twenty-One: Sozin's Comet, Part 4.

Reading a good book can make you forget reality, and feel strong emotions while doing it.  When you go deepen into writing, you can make have the same pleasure. If you wish, you can teleport yourself to a fantasy and marvelous world, and what´s better, share it with others later on.

I always loved writing. As a teenager, I wrote poetry, while as a grown-up man, I used to write articles about law, I even was a co-author in some books. One of the offices that I had worked as a lawyer incentivized writing and, every month, I wrote an article for its site or to some newspaper about labor law.

One morning, just after reaching there to work, while taking a warm cup of coffee to start working, I encountered a colleague: another lawyer who usually writes labor law articles as well. I praised his last article, as it was interesting. His answer was unforgotten: "I hate doing this, I only do because the office politics oblige me."

My invite to all the ones who write without obligation, to think why you do it. Which reasons motivate you?

  • "Too many writers write for the wrong reasons. They want to get famous or they want to get rich or they want to get laid by the girls with the bluebells in their hair... When everything works best, it´s not because you chose writing, but because writing chose you. It´s when you´re mad with it. When it´s stuffed in your ears, nostrils, under your fingernails. It´s when there´s no hope but that."  - Charles Bukowski, in a letter to Packard, wrote on December 23, 1990.

The words Bukowski expressed in this letter wasn´t directed only to writers, but for everyone who searches for a purpose in life, teaching that success doesn´t come easy.

So, why do you write? Do you agree with Bukowski?

Wish you all a nice week!
