Platitudinally Speaking, CON ends Blitz season
(Beat Reporter: Mark LaRocca)
In the spirit of the season let us say R.I.P. to the Boston Blitz… Yes. I have come here not to praise the Blitz, but, to bury them… for we are all dust, and unto dust we shall return… Are there any platitudes I am missing?... I’m sure I’ll find more… and please accept my apologies in advance… for I, as you, are a victim of circumstance… a mere pawn in the great chess game of life… a… well, never mind… sorry…
It’s just that I was there when the Connecticut Dreadnoughts gunned down our heroes (BOS 1.4 – CON 2.5) and it was not pretty. You see, the match winners accosted us with a nine millimeter glock… began firing uncontrollably… missing everything in sight… dropped the weapon… the Blitz picked it up and promptly shot themselves in the foot… sorry, there I go again… were rushed to Mass General and pronounced dead around 11pm Tuesday night.
The King is dead, long live the king… sorry.
But ours is not to reason why, ours is but… God, this is tough… to look at the games. First, let me say that this was no walkover for CON, as IM Bonin buttered up his hands before the match and quickly dropped his sword, stumbled backward over the stair railing, and implanted it squarely in his right eye… Ughhh!... well, it is that season.
All I can say is… he’s in a better place… sorry… Let’s take a quick peek at this 14 move mini-tragic-comedy…
IM Jay Bonin (CON) vs NM Vadim Martirosov (BOS)
1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 e6 3.c4 d5 4.Nbd2?!...
This move just doesn't make much sense. In Powerbook 2012, 31000+ games continued 4.Nc3..., 11000+ games continued 4.g3..., and only 28 games went down the path chose by IM Bonin.
4...c5 Black is already better.
5.cxd5 exd5 6.dxc5 Bxc5 7.Nb3 Bb6 8.g3? =/+
Black's initiative becomes far too strong after this.
[8.Bf4 Nc6 9.e3 0–0 Is equal]
8...Ne4 IM Bonin must have seen this simple move coming...
9.Nfd4?... This should lose a pawn and eventually the game. Better was the totally revolting, but better...
[9.Be3 When Black can just develop with 9...Nc3 with a much better game... or, just play the obvious... 9...Bxe3 10.fxe3 With a large... but, not winning advantage.]
9...Nc6 Black is, in a practical sense, winning.
10.Be3??...
One gets the impression here that IM Bonin was finishing a Big Mac sandwich while sipping a $1 large coffee.... and not really looking at the board. Black now finishes him off nicely.
[10.Bg2 Nxd4 11.Nxd4 Nxf2 12.Kxf2 Qf6+ 13.Bf3 Bxd4+ Should eventually win for Black.]
10...Ba5+! I give this an exclamation mark only because Vadim put down his pizza long enough to glance at the board.
11.Nxa5 Qxa5+ 12.Bd2 Nxd2 13.Qxd2 Qxd2+ 14.Kxd2 Nxd4
Black is a full piece up, with the better position... and he can still castle!! White could have and should have resigned here... or, at least put aside his sandwich. The rest is.... no doubt... the involuntary twitching of a headless body....
The game ended on move 47… but, hey… You gotta do what you gotta do… Sorry.
Boston (1 - 0)
Well, that was the highlight of the Blitz match... now comes the foot shooting part... it's true... God only takes the good ones... Sorry.
Our top board woes continue, as Marc cannot extricate himself from a season long funk... of course, GM Hess is not at all sympathetic.
GM Robert Hess (CON) vs IM Marc Esserman (BOS)
Boston (1 - 1)
I guess there is no rest for the weary... Sorry... Marc will just need to soldier on... Sorry... and somehow... play some good moves!... you know... like the ones he used to play when he was winning GOTW every other appearance. Ah, but I digress... you are what you are... and the Blitz... are not very good right now... as exemplified in this next amazing game... amazing in the sense that I just couldn't believe the level of foot shooting demonstrated... by none other than this years Annie Oakley of foot shooters... take a look at this... and you tell me... Will the sun come up tomorrow?... Sorry...
NM Ilya Krasik (BOS) vs Zachary Tanenbaum (CON)
Boston (1 - 2)
How about that!... Blitz fans. Sad, but true... another match slips through our fingers. But, I'm not one to dwell on the negative... unless, of course, it's Ilya... but, in all honesty... you can't blame this rotten season on just one person... although, if you had a vote... just kidding... let's forgive and forget... Sorry... and look at our final game... featuring the stalwart... Denys. never say die (Sorry), Shmelov... a man among men... Sorry... who takes it one move at a time... Sorry... well, you know what I mean... my candidate for Blitz MVP... Check it out...
SM Denys Shmelov (BOS) vs GM Michael Rohde (CON)
Boston (1.5 - 2.5)
Ok, well, that was soul cleansing... never felt better... after a handful of aspirin, and a good nights sleep.... I can see things clearer.
You have to move on... Sorry... Winning is not everything... Sorry... Time heals all wounds... Sorry... etc...
Yeah, The Blitz season is Ovah! However, we do have two matches to play... So, join us in our sorrow... won't you... you fans of self-inflicted pain... and come on down... This Wednesday, 7:30 when the Blitz will try to spite check the league leading New England Nor'easters, 59 Shepard st., Cambridge, MA.
Be there or be square... Sorry... GO BLITZ!
