Bishop and Knight Checkmate
So yesterday, I was playing a blitz game against @iKevvvv, and he mentioned the bishop and knight mate. I told him that it was really difficult and would most likely and in stalemate, and he agreed. So, I decided to learn the bishop and knight mate.
There are 3 stages to this mate, but first I'll show the entire thing:
Stage 1: Forcing the King to the Corner
Going again from the starting position, our end goal is to force the king to the "correct" corner of the board so we can force checkmate. (The "correct" corner is the corner that is the same color square as the one the bishop controls. You can checkmate in the wrong colored corner, but you can't force it.) The defending king will try its best to stay in the center, however, we can force it to the edge, but as you will see, it is the wrong area of the board, which we'll cover in the next step.
For now, we are just going to force the king to the edge of the board:
Stage 2: Forcing the King to the Correct Corner
We forced the king to the edge of the board, but it went to the incorrect one, since we have a light-squared bishop, and the h8 square is black. Our goal in this stage is to force the king towards a8.
It may seem very complicated, but there are two shapes to remember in the following positions:
