An Aid to Reading Chess Books

Libraries from Chess.com's Database

When reading a chess book I find it so much easier to study the game on-line rather than on a physical board. Also, I sometimes wish to see how the position was arrived at.

Here is a new index of games cited in Chess from Morphy to Botvinnik by Imre Koenig first published in 1950.  FM Kevin Bachler of CavemanChess recommends this excellent historical evolution of modern chess.

Here is a new index of games cited in Starting Out: The King's Indian Attack, written by John Emms in 2005.

In 2017 GM Andrew Soltis published a wonderful book 365 Chess Master Lessons in which he annotates 720 short, master level games with questions and answers to instruct the reader.  I have compiled an on-line library of all these 720 games, most of which are from Chess.com's database, though I entered some 200 myself.  These may be found on

In addition here are libraries of the games in Chess.com's database cited by Vukovic in The Art of Attack in Chess and by Soltis in The New Art of Defence in Chess.  The database includes almost all games cited by them. Chris Lakdawala in his book First Steps:  The Colle/London Systems cites 21 games in Chess.com's database.

These libraries were harder to compile than you might imagine, because the database is not consistent with first names and initials, and often the dates are missing or wrong.

I just thought that since I did the work for myself, others might find it handy.
