I'd love to share what motivates me in my chess games with help of the text and images.

  • The Pawn

Pushing the pawns close to the 7th rank is one of my biggest discoveries of the winning strategy.

Give your comment on how you estimate the pawn push to not block your own pieces.

King's Gambit is one of the most advantageous opening for quick pawn push.

I still struggle to avoid stalemates in the end games, so I think this quote is extremely powerful.

Pawns like to be taken from behind, therefore wink.png

Another important function of the pawns is to create a safe space for the King. But how often the dragon defense is ruining this pawn structure allowing some enemy bishop to sneak in?

Maybe we all should be like the pawns - a forward looking in our lives; but in chess it's rather a disadvantage because for each pawn the amount of moves is definite and must be calculated.

Now some quotes to add a philosophy to the technicalities of the pawns nature:

“I'm a chess piece. A pawn,' she said. 'I can be sacrificed, but I cannot be captured. To be captured would be the end of the game.” Paolo Bacigalupi, Ship Breaker

“Be the music of your soul. Don't be a pawn in someone else's game.” Amit Ray, Nonviolence: The Transforming Power

"The Pawns are the soul of the game! They alone form the attack and defense" Francois-Andre Danican Philidor

"A passed pawn increase in strength as the number of pieces on the board diminishes". Jose Raul Capablanca

"Pawns not only create the sketch for the whole painting, they are also the soil, the foundation, of any position." Anatoly Karpov

"When I was preparing for one term's work in the Botvinnik school I had to spend a lot of time on king and pawn endings. So when I came to a tricky position in my own games I knew the winning method". Garry Kasparov

"It cannot be too greatly emphasized that the most important role in pawn endings is played by the king". Siegbert Tarrasch

"A knight ending is really a pawn ending". Mikhail Botvinnik

"A pawn, when separated from his fellows, will seldom or never make a fortune". Francois-Andre Danican Philidor

"When a Piece or Pawn is in a situation to be taken by the enemy, it is said to be en prise. To put a piece en prise, is to play it so that it may be captured". Howard Staunton
