The Spotlight: Phiona Mutesi
In light of unusual events, I have realized another blogger has used chess memes daily. Since I respect their blog, I've shut-down "The Daily Chess Meme" series and created a brand-new series called "The Spotlight"... It kinda sounds mystical...
Anyways, the spotlight is on Phiona Mutesi, also known as "The Queen of Katwe". Her story is similar to a rags-to-riches story, which you can watch on Disney Plus (i.e. the movie is "Queen of Katwe"). Born in the slums of Uganda, Katwe to be exact, she is truly an exceptional player. Phiona has won the Ugandan Women's Junior Championship three times, has represented Uganda at four chess olympiads, and is one of the first titled female players in Ugandan chess history. She is now 24 years old, and her recent FIDE rating is 1623.
In conclusion, she is the chess queen of Africa. If you want more stories like these, say in the comments which chess player you like me to talk about next!
