Hello everyone, it is time for my monthly announcements for all upcoming daily tournaments I am directing for June. Simply click the title of each tournament listed to enter the registration page and reserve your spot. If you have any suggestions for an induvial who you believe deserves a memorial tournament, leave your suggestions in the comment section below and it will be considered.

1. 2018 Tigran Petrosian Memorial – June 17th, 2018

null

This tournament is dedicated to the life and games of Tigran Petrosian (June 17, 1929 – August 13, 1984), a Soviet Armenian Grandmaster, and World Chess Champion from 1963 to 1969. He was nicknamed "Iron Tigran" due to his almost impenetrable defensive playing style, which emphasized safety above all else.

Petrosian was a Candidate for the World Championship on eight occasions (1953, 1956, 1959, 1962, 1971, 1974, 1977 and 1980). He won the World Championship in 1963 (against Mikhail Botvinnik), successfully defended it in 1966—against Boris Spassky—and lost it to Spassky in 1969. Thus he was the defending World Champion or a World Championship Candidate in ten consecutive three-year cycles. He won the Soviet Championship four times (1959, 1961, 1969, and 1975).

2. 2018 John Mahoney Memorial – June 20th, 2018

null

This tournament is dedicated to the life and career of John Mahoney (June 20, 1940 – February 4, 2018), an English-American actor of stage, film, and television.

Born in Blackpool, England, U.K., Mahoney started his acting career on the stage in 1977 and moved into film in 1980. He was best known for playing the blue-collar patriarch Martin Crane in the American sitcom Frasier, which aired on NBC from 1993 to 2004. In addition to his film and television work, Mahoney also worked as a voice actor and was particularly passionate about his stage work on Broadway and in Chicago theatre.

3. 2018 Cancer Open – June 21st, 2018

null

This tournament is dedicated to all people who have Cancer for their zodiac sign. Cancer is the fourth astrological sign in the Zodiac, originating from the constellation of Cancer. It spans 90° and 120° celestial longitude. Under the tropical zodiac, the Sun transits this area on average between June 22 and July 22, and under the sidereal zodiac, the Sun transits this area between approximately July 16 and August 15.

In astrology, Cancer is the cardinal sign of the Water trigon, which is made up of Cancer, Pisces, and Scorpio. It is considered a negative sign, whose domicile, or ruling planet, is the Moon. Though some depictions of Cancer feature a lobster, the sign is most often represented by the crab, based on the Karkinos, a giant crab that harassed Heracles during his fight with the Hydra.

4. 2018 Paul Morphy Memorial – June 22nd, 2018

null

This tournament is dedicated to the life and games of Paul Morphy (June 22, 1837 – July 10, 1884), an American chess player. He is considered to have been the greatest chess master of his era and an unofficial World Chess Champion. He was a chess prodigy. He was called "The Pride and Sorrow of Chess" because he had a brilliant chess career but retired from the game while still young. Bobby Fischer included him in his list of the ten greatest players of all time, and described him as "perhaps the most accurate player who ever lived".

Morphy was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, to a wealthy and distinguished family. He learned to play chess by simply watching games between his father and uncle. His family soon recognized the boy's talent and encouraged him to play at family gatherings, and by the age of nine, he was considered to be one of the best players in New Orleans. At just twelve years of age, Morphy defeated visiting Hungarian master Johann Löwenthal in a match of three games.
