Sicilian Defense (For Devwinner)
The sicilian defense is a highly popular opening for both club and master level. This system creates strong imbalances, and offers great play for black.
Sicilian Defense: e4 c5
(Now here are some variations:)
Najdorf: e4 c5, Nf3 d6, d4 cxd4, Nxd4 Nf6, Nc3 a6
Dragon: e4 c5, Nf3 d6, d4 cxd4, Nxd4 Nf6, Nc3 g6
Scheveningen: e4 c5, Nf3 e6, d4 cxd4, Nxd4 Nf6, Nc3 d6
Lots of times in the sicilian defense white queenside castles in order to push up his kingside pawns and generate a fearsome attack. Black has to play sharp and aggressive moves to counter this threat. Many attacks, such as the Yugoslav and English, start from this opening.
Many grandmasters have played the opening countless times, including Kasparov, Fisher (he played a line with Bc4), Carlsen, Karpov, as well as many super-computers.
(This blog dedicated for Devwinner for the idea.)
