THE REIGN

Although there is not much information about his chess career when he was younger, there is still some records of tournaments while he was a teenager.

Hans Niemann also participated that year in the 2014 World Youth Chess Championships in Durban, South Africa, where he scored 6/11 in the under-12 section. Keep in mind, he was around 10 years old at that time, which is pretty impressive keeping in mind he has only played chess for 2-3 years. He placed 7th place in his group as a result, and not to mention, he also had a rating of 2000 at the time.

In early 2016, Hans Niemann got his first ever chess title as FM which is short for Fide Master. Later that year, he participated Saint Louis Invitational IM Norm and was one of the youngest ever players to participate at that tournament. He also went to the North American Youth Championship for U18 and he tied for first places, which is how he received his first IM norm.

Hans Niemann went on to become an IM which is short for International Master in 2018 at the U.S. Masters Championship where he also got a GM norm. That year, he participated in the World Youth Under-16 Olympiad which was located in Konya, Turkey. He placed third place as a result.

In 2020, Hans Niemann achieved his third and final GM norm at the CCSA Fall Invitational in November, winning the event which played an important role in him becoming a GM.

In January 2021, Hans Niemann earned the Grandmaster title at the ripe age of only 17. Later that year during the summer, Hans Niemann won the U.S. Junior Championship, held in St. Louis.

BACKLASH

In 2022, the huge incident happened where Hans Niemann was accused of cheating when he beat Magnus Carlsen at the 2022 Sinquefield Cup. Magnus Carlsen's withdrawal and accusations of cheating against Hans Niemann was false for the most part, but he did admit that he had cheated on online games but never over the board.

This was the start of the controversy of Hans Niemann cheating which led to Chess.com having to investigate Han's case. This controversy lasted for a whole entire year until it was disputed.

RECENT EVENTS

In 2023, Hans Niemann participated in the Tournament of Peace which is in Zagreb, Croatia crushing almost everyone in his way. He managed to score 8/9 with a 2946 performance rating, winning the event by 3 full points.

Hans Niemann played with a whopping accuracy of 98.0 while his opponent played with an accuracy of 89.4.

The opening that they played was Caro-Kann Defense: Advance, Botvinnik-Carls Defense. Hans Niemann found the most obscure moves that other people wouldn't be able to find which led to him winning this game.

Hans found a brilliant move, 39.h8 = N+ which was attacking the king, and so he had to try and defend, but Hans kept on finding a trial of brilliant moves until his opponent realized that they had no chances of winning and so they resigned.

2024 was a fairly decent year for Hans Niemann as he participated in the 2024 Speed Chess Championship. He managed to advance to the semifinal where he had to verse Magnus Carlsen, but he lost 12.5 - 17.5 which is pretty good considering that Magnus is one of the toughest guys to beat.

Hans had to play in a consolation match against Hikaru Nakamura where he unfortunately lost 9-21 which placed him in fourth place. That year, the Saint Louis Chess Club banned Hans Niemann from participating in their tournament due to his past of cheating.

In 2025, Hans Niemann participated in the Aeroflot Open 2025 chess tournament which was held in Moscow from February 28 to March 7. The prize fund for the tournament was around 255 thousand dollars or 20 million in ruble. Hans Niemann placed 2nd place right behind Ian Nepomniachtchi.

2 months later, he also participated in the Karpov Cup which wasn't a success for him since he placed third to last, 2.5 points behind 1st place.
