Hello today, if the title didn't tell you, I will be writing about the top ten most common openings in chess. If you want any info about me look in the sidebar, this includes my club, blog, and account. If you have any questions just message me. I would love to hear anything from you.

Anyway, Let's start with                                                                                                                      Number 10: The "Petrov Defense" or also known as the Russian Game:

This is the Petrov/Russian, the opening isn't that common but since many players play 1. e4, e5 then Nf3, there will be many times where you can play it.

Number 9: The Englund gambit,

The Englund gambit offers many traps for black, and will always end up in a good starting position for black.

Number 8: The Scandinavian defense,

A reverse of the Englund leading to many positions where black develops their queen very early in the game.

Number 7: The Caro Kann Defense,

A strange opening for many new players the Caro allows black to develop his pieces in an abnormal fashion with *normally* a very strong pawn on d5 supported by the one on c6.

Number 6: The French Defense,

The French to many new players is confusing with black have far different ideas with the pawn on e6 and maybe d5.

Number 5: The Queen's Gambit,

The Queen's Gambit is an opening with many lines it is an opening with many different options including the declined, leading to a closed game and the accepted with a more open game.

Number 4:  The Sicilian Defense,

The Sicilian is a very strategic opening with many variations including the open and closed lines, this makes it less popular among beginners and Intermediates you haven't studied it.

Number 3: The Ruy Lopez or the "Spanish"

The Ruy López, is a dynamic opening with a pretty common first set of moves revolving around the move a6. The Ruy López is a common opening even by beginners with the bishop immediately having sights on the knight on c6 and with any d pawn move by black pinning the knight. The Ruy López also allows for white castle early in the game keeping the king safe, ensuring a long game.

Number 2: The Four Knights Game,

The Four Knights, a simple opening leading to many options for both sides. The Four Knights also allows for many transformations between openings. With many ways to approach this opening it is a good one for beginners.

Number 1: The Italian Game,

The Italian Game, is a very common opening among beginners but, the opening besides its popularity is very closed with it normally taking more than 10 moves to get a piece traded.

I hope you enjoyed this list and thank you for reading this whole thing!
