Reach Your Goal Then Treat Yourself
Hello! This is H1, and we’re going to be running it back with another episode talking about chess knowledge, chess wisdom, and chess understanding again.
Celebrating your success is a perfect way to stay on track to achieving your goals. This very simple concept has been talked about forever and applies to chess. We shouldn't avoid this. When we achieve a goal, we should celebrate.
No matter how small the goal is, you should treat yourself. Don’t let these online goliaths tell you differently. If you aim to be 500 ELO on chess.com and reach it by the end of the year, you’re amazing. All of us are busy and have different lives.
It’s good to buy yourself something nice. I remember when I wanted to get past 1000 ELO on this chess platform called “CHESSMASTER.” I couldn’t beat this Bot lady named Berry in this game. Once I defeated her, I was so happy as a kid, and I ate my favorite snack.
I remember the first time I beat my big brother, whom we’ll call Pmoney for this article. I beat him three times in a row, and he gave me $20. I was only 10 years old. So, $20 to a 10-year-old meant I was rich.
When I used to teach chess classes at different schools, we would give students an incentive for learning a lesson. Plus, certificates for passing a curriculum. It was an honorable moment to take the team to a chess tournament and win a huge trophy, realizing all your hard work paid off in the end. Maybe a pizza party afterward to celebrate even more. But if you don’t have a support system like this, then you have to be your support system.
It’s an achievement to accomplish a goal, so buy yourself something you want. This reinforces your joy for chess because improving is a very gruesome experience. I was talking to a chess player the other day about how to improve beyond 1600 ELO, and it isn’t fun because it does take a huge amount of time to get to this point.
To keep the same motivation you had before, it’s important to be surrounded by like-minded people and be your best cheerleader. Treat yourself when you accomplish your chess goal, and if you didn’t have a chess goal before this article, create one right now.
Keep fighting until the end, staying focused in chess, andin real life too! PEACE
