The Halosar Trap - A Devious 9 Move Checkmate
On my last blog post, fellow blogger @cellen01 (who I strongly encourage you to check out) suggested that I do one game with annotations instead of my usual walkthrough, so here goes. Let me know which one you prefer in the comments. Now, onto the blog:
There are many ways to get a quick checkmate as white. I already went over 2 of them: The Scholar’s Mate and the Legal Trap. This blog post will be going over a 3rd way to quickly checkmate Black: The Halosar Trap.
Here is the way the trap is played:
So how do you punish this trap? You might think, "Capture the knight," but are you sure you want to lose your queen this early?
So you have to find another way. You might think Na6 will work, but White can still claim the advantage:
You are probably also thinking of moving your e-pawn to give the king an escape square. Let me show you why that doesn't work either:
You might block with either of your Knights, but White can still fork:
The best move is to block RIGHT AFTER White castles, instead of waiting till c7 is threatened:
The Halosar Trap is one of the most aggressive traps out there, more so than the Legal Trap, which focuses heavily on development. But just like the Legal Trap, it uses a Queen Sacrifice, which is very effective. However, there are ways to force a Queen capture, and they will be showing up soon. Again, let me know which blog style you prefer
