Assault on the fianchetto: 3.h4!? against the KID/Grünfeld [Part One: The Sidelines]

Hi everyone!

This is my first ever blog post on chess.com, so I'm not quite sure what to talk about. Regardless of that, I decided to post something about openings, and here it is! My first ever blog on chess.com about the hypermodern setup against the KID and Grunfeld: 3.h4!?

This move seems ridiculous at first sight - what does this pawn push do?!

In fact, it actually does a lot of things:
- It tries to undermine Black's kingside fianchetto and cause short castling to be a little dangerous.
- It restricts Black's options as going for the Grunfeld with 3...Bg7 and 4...d5 is unsatisfactory in this position, meaning that Black's chances of knowing how to counter 3.h4 are slim.
- It throws Black out of his territory as they will probably not be familiar with the move 3.h4!?, making this pawn push an excellent weapon in bullet and blitz, possibly even rapid!
What I will cover in this blog:
- If Black goes for a Grunfeld setup against 3.h4.
- If Black goes for a Benoni setup against 3.h4.
So, let's get straight to it!
If Black plays a Grunfeld setup:
(1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.h4 Bg7 4.Nc3 d5!?)
If Black plays a Benoni setup:
(1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.h4 c5 4.d5)

Model Games: Grunfeld setup
Model Games: Benoni setup

Part two will be coming soon! In the second blog of this opening series the more mainstream ideas will be covered, such as if Black goes for a KID (King's Indian Defense) setup.
Once again, thanks for reading!

Hello there! I'm posting blogs regularly, though recently I'm quite busy, what with online ool and extracurricular activities happy.png. However I'm still trying my best to post around 1-3 blogs a week! I hope you enjoy them. Some blogs are purely informational and instructive while others are more for light entertainment value.

Pleasant reading!
