Before the game my board neighbor was describing how in a big one section tournament like the U.S. Open, the first 4-5 rounds feel like a yo yo because the swiss system pairs you with someone much higher one round and then someone much lower the next, until enough rounds have gone by to get you into your "performance neighborhood." So for this round I was again paired up as a heavy underdog. Just what I like because it is a win-win. I either win the game or I get a free lesson and don't lose any rating points for it.

I am a professor researching goal setting, motivation, emotions, creativity, and related aspects of human performance in early-stage entrepreneurship.

From 2012 to 2017 I pursued aggressive adult improvement (starting at age 43). I recorded my journey here as I gained over 400 rating points over two years, peaking at 1753 USCF in 2015. After taking a multi-year break to complete my doctorate, I returned to competitive chess in 2024.
