My opponent showed up at the board 25 minutes late. Apparently the rule is that you have to wait for your opponent for 60 minutes or until the first time control is reached, whichever is first. Cesar strolled in with an unopened Red Bull in hand and I wasn't sure if that was a good omen or a bad omen for me--but I'll take a 25 minute time advantage any day.

At the end of this round, I had about a 1750 performance rating going and was tied for 3rd place in the U1600 section!



From 2012 to 2017 I pursued aggressive adult improvement (starting at age 43). I recorded my journey here as I gained over 400 rating points over two years, peaking at 1753 USCF in 2015. After taking a multi-year break to complete my doctorate, I returned to competitive chess in 2024.
