September and October Training Drought

September and October Training Drought

It's been a tough road for my chess training since my June/July World Open trip. I've played three weekend tournaments over the past four months, two of them rapid events and then a G/65 event where I only played two rounds, losing both games.

As we all know real life can get in the way of our favorite game but at the end of the day, unless your name is Magnus, it is just a game.

Here is my training chart for September and October. The idea is to see lots of green and some yellow but no red! As you can see, it is a sea of red.

I decided to only show my mandatory training items because if I included all the supplemental training I didn't do, it would look like a Kansas City Chiefs stadium.

The good news is that I have a serious weekend swiss tournament scheduled for this weekend. It is a 5SS G/120, d5. This is what I needed to get my training motivation back on track.

From 2012 to 2017 I pursued aggressive adult improvement (starting at age 43). I recorded my journey here as I gained over 400 rating points over two years, peaking at 1753 USCF in 2015. After taking a multi-year break to complete my doctorate, I returned to competitive chess in 2024.
