Vacation Chess Study

Like many of you, I enjoy studying chess while vacationing. I usually pack one bag with clothes and toiletries and then another bag with the essentials: chess board, 3-4 opening books, scorebook, notebook, the talky book I'm currently reading ("How to Reassess Your Chess"), the master game collection I'm currently studying ("A First Book of Morphy"), and maybe my laptop in order to log in and play a scheduled game through the DHLC.

This time I brought only electronic books, and I am using my Galaxy Tab 4 to both read and stay in touch with my online friends.

There's nothing like a chessboard, good book, cup of coffee, beautiful view, and wide open schedule to energize my grey matter.

From 2012 to 2017 I pursued aggressive adult improvement (starting at age 43). I recorded my journey here as I gained over 400 rating points over two years, peaking at 1753 USCF in 2015. After taking a multi-year break to complete my doctorate, I returned to competitive chess in 2024.
