Basic outline of strategies, techniques and steps on how to attack the king in chess

In the opening -

  • Control the center,
  • develop your pieces, and
  • protect your own king by castling.

Going into the middle game -

  • Coordinate your pieces to work together,
  • activate as many of your pieces as possible to have a purpose, and
  • make a plan to gain an advantage.

Here are the basic advantages which you want to gain that are what I call the elements of chess:

  1. seize and attempt to keep the initiative to control the game;
  2. the material advantage;
  3. the time or tempos advantage;
  4. the space or squares on the board controlled advantage.

Further advantages to work for:

  1. the mobility of the pieces; and
  2. the quality of position for your pieces (a lower material value piece may have a higher quality of value in the position, depending on if it's activated).

Know the concept of transformation:

  • Convert one of these advantages into another to attack your adversary's king.
  • For example, advantages, such as the initiative and space, can be converted or transformed to a material advantage or an attack for checkmate.

Gain an advantage or advantages and coordinate your pieces for an attack on the king. Then you can calculate tactics (such as a pin, a fork, or overloading one of your opponent's pieces or key squares), winning combinations of several planned moves in a sequence, and/or sacrifices.

Checkmate the king or when your opponent resigns, shake hands. Try not to gloat.
