A Journey to 1000 ELO: Documenting My Chess Improvement
Embarking on this chess blog marks the beginning of my quest to achieve a 1000 ELO rating on chess.com.
As an adult improver, I've been with chess since my teenage years, initially learning the game from cousins. However, it wasn't until my 20s, spurred on by a friend from high school, that I truly delved into the world of chess, discovering its rich culture and history. The motivation behind starting this blog stems from a desire to track and document my progress. With limited time, given my family responsibilities and being in my mid-40s, the journey to improve my chess skills is a challenging yet rewarding endeavor.
Here are my stats, it's sad....
Through this blog, I hope to share my experiences, challenges, and victories, offering insights that may resonate with fellow adult improvers.
Recognizing the constraints on my time, I've adopted a strategy focused on tactics, a proven method at my level.
Daily, I dedicate a modest 30 minutes to an hour to chess work, sometimes just 20 minutes before bedtime for tactical puzzles. Usually, it's a couple of tactics a day and one 15/10 game.
While I see the improvements in my games through consistent tactical training, the struggle lies in finding enough time for in-depth chess study.
As I balance work, family, and chess, I acknowledge that my memory and mental sharpness may not be what they once were. However, age is no barrier to improvement, and I am determined to overcome these challenges on my path to 1000 ELO.
In my pursuit of improvement, I recently revisited one of my games, a first-time experience for me. Admittedly, I rushed through it, relying heavily on the game review. Despite not recalling move-by-move details, this analysis revealed the importance of a more thoughtful and deliberate approach to game examination, a lesson I am eager to incorporate into my routine.
Beyond the chessboard, I am currently engrossed in the book "Bobby Fischer and His World: The Man, the Player, the Riddle, and the Colorful Characters Who Surrounded Him." Opting for the old-school charm of a paperback, I am navigating through the challenges of playing through the moves, some of which are not readily available in databases.
Stay tuned for a comprehensive book review once I complete this journey through Fischer's life and chess career.
This blog serves as a chronicle of my chess journey, an odyssey towards a 1000 ELO rating. I invite fellow adult improvers and chess enthusiasts to join me on this adventure, as we navigate the complexities of chess, share insights, and celebrate the victories, both big and small, along the way.
