Chess with Dice?

Dice have been around for thousands of years .... chess, not as long  ....apparently only 1500 years compared to 5000 years!  The combination of the two should then not be a surprise though it still seems to me like putting ketchup on corn flakes.

There are a number of chess dice variants described on a number of websites ..... I have never played any nor have I any immediate desire to ...... I would rather play Sorry with pawns, chutes and ladders with knights, candyland with rooks, or mousetrap with knights .... all good fun on a rainy day.

Following are a few interesting "Chess&Dice" quotes I discovered one rainy evening;

"Grew told him of variations of chess. ... There were even the popular varieties, in which the original position of the chessmen were decided by throws of the dice, ..." - Pebble in the Sky (1950) Isaac Asimov

"Fussball ist wie schach, nur ohne wurfel."    (Football is like chess, only without the dice.) - attributed to German Football player Lukas Podolski.

"Most gods throw dice, but Fate plays chess and you don't find out til too  late that he's been playing with two queens all along."  - Sir Terry Pratchett OBE (English Writer)

""Dice" - a young savant and inspiration for the device, emerges and targets "Chess" to avenge her fathers death."  - Jan 2011 Episode of TV series "The Cape"
