In 1858 at the café de la Regence in Paris, the young American prodigy Paul Morphy played simultaneously and blindly, without seeing the boards, against the 8 best Parisian chess players. The moves of his opponents were communicated to him only by voice. The match lasted over 10 hours and the champion's result was 6 wins and 2 draws. An enthusiastic French journalist wrote that Morphy had been superior to Julius Caesar, because "he came, he did NOT see and conquered!".
In homage to the forerunner of the world chess champions I report here his famous MATE OF THE OPERA. He played blindly again during the interval of the Barber of Seville at the Opera House in Paris against the Duke of Brunswick and Count Isuard in consultation.

Morphy tornò in Patria negli USA trionfalmente.

Morphy came back home in USA in triumph. He no longer had rivals willing to challenge him. He tried to dedicate himself to the work (he was a good lawyer), but no one took him seriously. He was now considered only as an excellent chess player. For this reason he was also rejected by a girl he had fallen in love with. This shock revealed in him the first symptoms of a mental illness which led to his premature death. It was 1884 and he was 47 years old. The first official world championship would be held just two years later.
