The "YOGURT SCANDAL"happened in the 1978 world championship against oviet champion Anatoly Karpov & Viktor Korchnoi in philippines.

1st game was normal But when the s2nd game started the cheating began  Anatoly karpov was served blueberry  yogurt by a waitor without him asking ????

Korchnoi's team started protesting that it could be a cheating code or something!!!!!!!

THE THEORY: Different yogurt flavours or the specific timing that it was brought could mean different things!!

HYPOTHETICAL CODES: Korchnoi's team suggested that a fruit yogurt could mean "ask a draw" while a different snack or flavour(sliced mango) could mean "decline a draw"!!!

THE OUTCOME: After a few moves on after receiving the blueberry yogurt   Karpov did offer a draw!!

THE OFFICIAL RULING: Despite the complaints , the matches chief arbiter  took it seriously

to issue a formal decree to prevent further suspicion !!

  • Timing. yogurt could only be served at  the specified time 
  • Flavour. only violet coloured yogurt was allowed.
  • Protocol. A designated waiter will bring Karpov the yogurt.
