Chess has its own language. Through the centuries, a chess vocabulary has been built up. All aspects of the game are described. Chess players learn the language which becomes defined and described. A Chess Dictionary or Glossary gives precision to the language of "the royal game."

Byrne J. Horton’s, Dictionary of Modern Chess (1959) has formed the basis for the definitions I’ve tried to capture here. Some terms emerge and develop through the years. I hope these terms will be recognizable in this Chess Crossword!
