Anatoly Karpov (b. 1951) was a World Champion and FIDE World Champion.  His many games repay careful consideration. He has been known for his determination and stamina. His demeanor at the board has led to him being seen as cold and isolated from his opponents.

Karpov's style is positional. Karpov said:

Let us say that a game may be continued in two ways: one of them is a beautiful
tactical blow that gives rise to variations that don't yield to precise calculations; the other is clear positional pressure that leads to an endgame with microscopic chances of victory . . . I would choose [the latter] without thinking twice. If the opponent offers keen play I don't object; but in such cases I get less satisfaction, even if I win, than from a game conducted according to all the rules of strategy with its ruthless logic.· [David Hooper and Kenneth Whyld, The Oxford Companion to Chess, Second Edition, 1992 (New York: Oxford University Press, 1992), 192.]

Karpov has gradually retired from competitive play. But his impressive record remains. This includes "a peak Elo rating of 2780 and 90 total months as the world’s top-ranked player" (Chess Hall of Fame ).
