Aron Nimzowitsch (1886-1935) was a leading chess theoretician and a significant chess player in the early part of the 20th century. He was "one of the great players of his era, among the strongest of any era to never become world champion" [https://www.chess.com/players/aron-nimzowitsch]. He was "one of the strongest players in the world from the mid-twenties to the beginning of the thirties" [Per Skjoldager and Jørn Erik Nielsen, Aron Nimzowitsch: On the Road to Chess Mastery, 1886-1924 (Jefferson, NC: McFarland & Co., Inc., 2012), 1].

Nimzowitsch's controversial theories had to fight for existence and to earn their way with chess professionals. Reinfeld wrote: "No other master’s games are so rich in human interest and dramatic appeal….Perhaps this is due to the fact that he not only had to win his games against opponents, but in addition he had to win over a hostile chess world. At every one of his games there was a specter, an unseen enemy" [Fred Reinfeld, Hypermodern Chess (New York: Dover, 1958), vii].
