“The first major international chess tournament in America in the twentieth century” (Wikipedia) was held in a small town in northwestern Pennsylvania from April 25, 1904 to May 19, 1904. The Cambridge Springs Tournament was “one of the strongest chess tournaments ever held” (Wall, “Cambridge Springs 1904” at https://www.chess.com/article/view/cambridge-springs-1904), featuring European and American masters. Eight of the strongest European players participated and of the top eleven players in the world, only three were absent. For the first time in chess tournament history, “a daily chess bulletin was produced showing all the games from the previous day's round” (Wall).
